Mosquito menace near Navi Mumbai's Seawoods station site: NMMC

NAVI MUMBAI:
The civic body has served a notice to Larsen &Toubro, as a large number of mosquito breeding sites were found at the construction site of the Seawoods-Darave railway station, which is being carried out by L&T constructions.

Every year, as part of pre-monsoon preparations, NMMC officials conduct malaria awareness campaigns in the city. The civic health officials also undertake surveys on the construction sites in the city, which are likely to become mosquito-breeding spots.

A civic official said that the construction site at Seawoods where the station complex is being built is one of the largest in the city. Hence, L&T has also assigned an agency for the maintenance of the site.

"We did a survey three days ago and the officials found several mosquito breeding spots at the upcoming railway station site. So we sent them a notice, seeking clarification on how these breeding spots have been found, despite the company assigning an agency for maintaining the site. They are supposed to reply within 24 hours after receiving the notice," said Dr D Paropkari, head of health department, NMMC.

"There were quite a few mosquito-breeding spots on the site and we could have ordered them (L&T) to stop work immediately. But as the railway station project is for the benefit of the public and such an order could have affected the project's progress, we have just issued a notice to them. Once we receive a response, a meeting will be organized with the civic commissioner and further action will be taken by the NMMC officials, as per his instructions," added Dr Paropkari

When contacted, an L&T spokesperson sought more time to respond to the issue.
